It’s 60 years since a reluctant housewife from Moonee Ponds made her stage debut. It’s now part of showbiz lore that Edna Everage soon found her theatrical feet and went on to become an international megastar. That first performance at the University of Melbourne is recalled with typical wit by Barry Humphries – the creator of Dame Edna, Australia’s greatest satirical character – in the latest edition of 3010, Melbourne University Magazine.
The magazine, distributed to about 220,000 University alumni across the globe, also looks at the latest research on earthquakes and talks to the lawyers who tried unsuccessfully to save two condemned Australian drug smugglers from a firing squad in Indonesia earlier this year.
